Hello,
I opened a PR that adds a URL parameter ?tablet_mode_house=<selector> (based on the model of ?fullscreen=force) to directly enable the tablet mode of a house when loading the dashboard, without going through the « Tablet Mode » menu.
The need: quickly deploy wall-mounted tablets
Today, the tablet mode is configured manually, per device, via the menu — and sessions last a year, so there is no daily pain. The need arises during (re)deployment, when the session state is not yet there or is lost:
- kiosk browser (Fully Kiosk or other) reinstalled/reset,
- browser data cleared / logout,
- putting multiple tablets into service at once (camping, retail, office…) where configuring each device manually does not scale.
With a startup URL, an installer can point each tablet to, for example:
/dashboard/<dashboard_selector>?tablet_mode_house=<house_selector>&fullscreen=force
and it starts locked on the correct dashboard, in tablet mode, full screen — without any manipulation on the device. (In my case, I also hide, via the Fully Kiosk CSS, the tablet mode selector and the dashboard change to gain height and lock the user on a single dashboard.)
Design side (following feedback on the PR):
- the parameter only takes the selector of the house (URL-safe slug);
- the « Tablet Mode » menu displays the ready-to-copy URL for the selected house (Copy button), so no one needs to know a selector;
- no-op on Gladys Plus (the menu is hidden there);
- visible failure on screen (unknown selector or network error), never silent.
Does this need for quick deployment resonate with others? Feedback welcome!
