It would be great to be able to detect the presence of a user when a device is detected on the local network, as in v3. For example, when the phone reconnects to Wi-Fi.
The topic had been raised during the creation of the « Bluetooth search » module.
What had been reported is that now our phones regularly and by default change their MAC addresses (used for Wi-Fi), making it difficult to identify a user.
Otherwise, it would be necessary to try to detect the phone’s name on the Wi-Fi network if possible, as proposed by my internet box.
or you can assign a static IP to a device by IP, it’s not complicated
Yes, but it’s also less widespread!
I think not many people will implement this, is it worth developing this type of module as a priority?
The votes will tell if it’s a priority, for my part no, and if it’s done, it’s better to do it right, setting your IP as fixed is not the solution unlike yours mentioned above, device name (phone)
The network solution would be much more practical than Bluetooth once implemented. Everyone always has a phone on them when they leave home, and Bluetooth detection doesn’t necessarily work with all phones.
I agree with your reasoning, though! While you might forget your NUT keychain, it’s less and less likely you’ll forget your phone ![]()
I may have expressed myself poorly… Sorry
I’m not saying that this would be a bad feature, if it comes out I would probably use it, what I mean is that, telling the user that they can enable this feature but they will have to set their phone to a fixed IP from their router otherwise it won’t work, well that’s not user-friendly and not in the spirit of Gladys 4.
So yes, it’s certain that we can make a tutorial for each internet box and router, but it’s still not very very simple for someone who knows absolutely nothing.
By mDNS maybe?
I just did a test and in my case, my phone doesn’t return its name when queried, after some research this could be related to Android ![]()
So unfortunately, mDNS wouldn’t be a reliable solution
HA proposes presence detection via the Freebox: Freebox - Home Assistant
I find that quite clever.
Hi everyone! What’s the conclusion of this topic?
I know that in v3 phone detection on the local network existed, but since then phones have evolved and are increasingly implementing measures to block this kind of tracking.
Does this request still make sense, or can it be closed to free up the votes?
On Android 12 and 13 in particular, it is possible to set a fixed MAC address on certain Wi-Fi networks.
So for me it still remains relevant as a complement to other methods, perhaps.
Hello,
I’m going to change the subject, not for smartphone detection, but for detection of any device.
Detect whether a device is powered on, or even perform a Wake-on-LAN…
Finally, I’m strongly interested in a « complex » management of the LAN.
For your information, I’ve started a service for discovering devices on the network.
I will keep you informed as soon as I have a testable version.
I’ll try it this afternoon to see ![]()
@AlexTrovato do you need a specific size / aspect ratio / resolution? Any particular file format?
I noted this down => JPG 800x534
Especially with a white background ![]()
Thanks
I’m not too excited about this one, the Ethernet port is fine, but I find it doesn’t show the « local network » enough.
But it can also be decided by vote (by the little heart on the image).
