Integration of public transit and bikes in Montreal (Bixi and STM)

Hello everyone,

I’m sharing an external integration for Montrealers: STM Montréal. It displays in Gladys the next STM buses, the status of metro lines, and available BIXI bikes near you.

What it does

  • :bus: Next bus arrivals: a device per stop with waiting times, the line, and a summary (« 24 3 min · 747 14 min »).
  • :metro: Metro status: green, orange, yellow, and blue lines, with the STM message (« Normal metro service » or the interruption text).
  • :bicycle: BIXI stations: bikes, electric bikes, and available spaces.
  • :bar_chart: 3 dashboard widgets: arrivals, metro status, BIXI station.
  • :high_voltage: Scenes:
    • « bus in 5 min », to turn on the entrance light for example;
    • « orange line disrupted », to receive a message;
    • « BIXI station empty or full »;
    • actions « read next buses » and « read the status of a line ».

Designed to be simple

Nothing to configure to get started:

  1. Check that your home has an address in Gladys.
  2. Install the integration and click on « Save ».
  3. Open the Discovery tab: the bus stops and BIXI stations closest to you are already there, with their real name (« Bus – Notre-Dame / Peel (36 → West) »). Click on « Add ».

Without any account, you have the scheduled bus times and BIXI bikes.

With a free STM key (5 minutes, step-by-step guide in the documentation), you also have the real-time bus times and the metro status.

For a stop far from home (work, school…), the « Find a stop » button finds the code from an intersection.

Installation

Call for testers :folded_hands:

This is a first version (0.2.1). Your feedback interests me, especially on:

  • Metro status: the STM API is not publicly documented, and I reconstructed it from free applications. If a line displays a strange status during a disruption, let me know.
  • BIXI winter: stations removed for the winter should display « Removed from the BIXI network » and return alone in the spring. We’ll see in November!
  • the clarity of messages and configuration for a non-technical person.

Issues can be reported here or in GitHub issues.

Thanks

  • To @prohand, whose TCL (Lyon) integration served as a model.
  • To Transitous, a free community service that provides scheduled times, stop names, and search.
  • To the open data of the STM (CC BY 4.0) and the public BIXI Montréal feed.

Unofficial integration, not affiliated with STM or BIXI.

That’s funny :grinning_face:

Keep it up, now we just have to somehow tell the Canadian: Look across the pond… there’s Gladys’ assistant
