Weather station: Which equipment to choose?

Hello everyone

Well, I couldn’t find where to put this request… it ends up here, sorry, I didn’t find the right category.

I would like a weather station that I can interface with Gladys. I did see that

Hi @bong101,

If I may, the device you give as an example cannot be considered a « good station. » Let’s compare like with like, keeping Amazon as a reference: Netatmo has 12,000 reviews with a 4.4 rating versus a 3.9 rating and 64 reviews for the one you mention, which clearly has connection issues.
Admittedly there is no screen on the Netatmo. But with Gladys, is that really necessary ^^

The price of the Netatmo is €303 without promotion:

  • €137 indoor module + station (1)
  • €166 anemometer (2) + rain gauge (3).
  • Possibility to add additional indoor modules - €70

The typical order of magnitude for a connected weather station is between €100 and €1,000. Netatmo is in the lower-middle. The advantage is that you can add modules over time and therefore just start with the indoor station + indoor module at €137 (which already beats all competition).
My feedback (and it’s the only one I could recommend) is that before investing I searched extensively and found nothing comparable at this price, especially in terms of community and the centralization of data for forecasts and live weather everywhere in France.
I’ve had it for 4 years (I actually got it for €250) and I have nothing to complain about, everything is perfect. I had a failure on the anemometer, Netatmo sent me a replacement without issue in 4 days even though the warranty had expired by 1 month; I lost a part of the rain gauge (tipping bucket) which was sent back to me within 2 business days.
I find the app suitable and performant (notably the widget).

In short, it’s well worth its price, especially now that it’s in Gladys, with battery management, weather-based scenarios, etc.
And yet you might think I’m defending my turf but on the contrary (I’m only speaking from my experience and I must be unlucky) I would not recommend the cameras (indoor or outdoor), the Netatmo doorbell and the BTICINO by Netatmo intercom because I’ve only had problems with them, whether it’s the connectors of the indoor camera (I have 2 - same for both) that get damaged just from the weight of the cable (which is standard), the ultra-frequent disconnections with the app (not very useful for a doorbell and surveillance) while there’s no network disconnection…
Same for the valves (I have 8) which consume batteries like crazy, I don’t understand the radio choice, negligible and non-extendable range… in short, far from Zigbee.

And yet regarding the station: I recommend taking advantage of promotions and buying progressively. If you want to look into something a bit more comparable, maybe check out the Froggit which is already more widespread.

Then you have DAVOS, Bresser or Inovalley.

Hope you find what you’re looking for. And that there will be Gladys compatibility ^^

I just want to add that users’ Netatmo data (who wish to share them?) are available here https://weathermap.netatmo.com/

Thanks @Terdious for your feedback

@bong101 it also depends on exactly what you’re looking for, for example at my place I just have Zigbee temperature/humidity sensors (inside and one on my terrace), it’s not the same as a full weather station, but for my use it’s sufficient to have a perfect history of temperature/humidity.

If your budget is limited

thank you @Terdious for this very detailed article and very
thank you @cicoub13 for the info about data sharing
and thank you @pierre-gilles (but your solution isn’t for me, but you didn’t know my need )

The need: I need to know the exact rainfall that falls in my garden, because I run a « remote vegetable garden », I’m often away, it’s good if the vegetable garden is watered if it’s been very hot, or if it’s not watered even though 10 mm of rain has already fallen.
With Meteociel, I look at the readings from 2 stations less than 5 km from the house, and sometimes the differences are crazy

When I say it’s too expensive, it’s not so much the price of this item, it’s the whole home automation setup that starts to get expensive.

What also tires me is having to put my data on the Internet

Equipment-> Internet ← Me who wants to read my data

whereas we should be able to do this

Internet ← Equipment ← Me who wants to read my data

If the service is canceled or becomes paid, I could still query my data.

pff it’s complicated, isn’t it?

I finally asked ChatGPT

I’m looking for a connected weather station with which I can query the data without going through the internet (but via the local network)?

It gave me 5 names, including Netatmo

2. Netatmo Weather Station

  • Description: This station is known for its sleek design and ease of use.
  • Features:
    • Although Netatmo often uses the cloud for data synchronization, it is possible to access the sensors directly over the local network using custom scripts or third-party applications like weewx or pywws.

But also

  1. Davis Instruments Vantage Vue
  2. Netatmo Weather Station
  3. Ambient Weather WS-2902C
  4. Ecowitt GW1000

I ordered the ECOWITT GW1000

See you soon

Apparently you can use Node-RED to send the data to Gladys

Ah not bad… I’ve heard of Ecowitt2mqtt as well

both projects seem active, so that’s cool

Hello,
For a few more hours the station (an indoor module and an outdoor module) is €99.99 on Amazon
