End of free Docker Teams on April 14, migration?

Hello contributors!

Docker recently announced they will remove their free plan for organizations.

They first sent this communication: https://web.docker.com/rs/790-SSB-375/images/privatereposfaq.pdf

Because their communication was not clear at all, they were heavily criticized by the entire open-source community and responded with this article:

For now, I’m a bit unclear about what to do. Gladys doesn’t seem to fit the « open-source project » category because the project is monetized and therefore we’re not eligible to keep this team for free.

Their paid « Teams » plan is expensive and requires a minimum of 5 users (the starting price is $300/year, which is really expensive just to host Docker images…)

I’ve looked a lot and there are thousands of messages from open-source maintainers who are in the same situation as us: GitHub · Where software is built

The solution would be to move the use of our registry to GitHub (which already hosts the Gladys image), except we’re stuck with existing users who won’t get updates if we do nothing, and above all we’ll lose access to the « gladysassistant/gladys » tag on Docker — it’s really a shame…

@VonOx @AlexTrovato what do you think?

Wow, that’s intense…

Do we need to set up a startup script for Gladys so it can replace itself on Docker with the right repository?

Gladys Plus is monetized, not Gladys, right? That can’t work?

That could be a solution if they ever carry out their threat

Depends on how they view it, their program specifies « Not have a pathway to commercialization. Your organization must not seek to make a profit through services »

Gladys is funded by Gladys Plus, so if we’re strict that doesn’t fit their criteria.

Otherwise they have another program that’s exempt:

I’ll try to apply

Also, given the hundreds of thousands of projects that are affected, they must be completely swamped — I don’t expect a quick response, I hope they don’t cut the service on April 14…

Ok, so the « Docker Verified Publisher Program » is $5,000 per year

Abandoned!

I saw it this morning in my emails :stuck_out_tongue: I suspected it would end up like that, I’m glad I hadn’t started coding anything. End of story!

That’s good, they listened to their community.
