Hi everyone!
Have you ever wondered which plane was flying over your house? Here’s Aircraft overhead: the planes flying over your house, in Gladys. Their transponders broadcast their position (ADS-B), and a network of receivers maintained by volunteers collects this data.
What it does
- One aircraft per house: the number of aircraft within the chosen radius (10 km by default), the distance of the closest one, its altitude and its flight.
- Multiple sources to choose from:
- adsb.lol, by default: a community network with open data, no account required;
- adsb.fi: another community network, for personal use;
- your own ADS-B receiver (a Raspberry Pi with readsb, dump1090-fa, or tar1090): nothing leaves your home;
- OpenSky, only with their written agreement (see below).
- Two scene triggers:
- Aircraft overhead: within a certain distance, below a certain altitude, once per passage. The integration looks 60 seconds ahead on the trajectory to not miss a fast-moving aircraft between readings.
- Emergency code: a nearby aircraft displays 7500, 7600, or 7700.
- A scene action « Aircraft over a house »: the closest flight with its registration, type, distance, altitude, speed, heading, and direction to look.
- A widget « Aircraft overhead »: the closest aircraft, with the flight and type, direction to look, altitude, speed, and an arrow for the heading. Or « clear skies ».
The cool part
- An aircraft within 3 km and below 2,000 m → « Air France A320 to the northwest, 1,800 m » on the living room tablet. The kids love it.
- An emergency code nearby → a notification, for enthusiasts.
- With your own receiver, everything stays at home, with a reading every 10 seconds.
Installation
Gladys 5.1 minimum. It will arrive in the store at the next indexer pass. In a hurry? Integrations → Install from GitHub, with the address GitHub - LM1LC3N7/gladys-aircraft: Gladys Assistant external integration for aircraft flying over your home (adsb.lol, adsb.fi, your own ADS-B receiver or OpenSky): closest flight, altitude and heading, an “aircraft overhead” scene trigger and a dashboard widget. Unofficial. · GitHub
- Place your house on the map (Settings → Houses), and accept location access when installing the integration.
- Keep adsb.lol, or choose another source. For your receiver, enter the address of its map, for example
http://192.168.1.30/tar1090/. - Open Discovery, add the device, then place the Aircraft overhead widget on a dashboard.
Honest small reservations
- OpenSky is no longer the default source, contrary to what I had announced. Their terms require a written agreement for any use in an automated system, even non-profit. The option remains for those who obtain it.
- The position of the house is rounded to approximately 1 km before being sent to adsb.lol or adsb.fi. With your own receiver, nothing leaves.
- Only aircraft equipped with an ADS-B transponder are visible. Some military or recreational aircraft are missing.
- I don’t have a receiver at home. This mode follows the readsb documentation: your feedback is welcome.
Like the previous ones, developed with Claude Code. Independent project, not affiliated with adsb.lol, adsb.fi, or the OpenSky Network. Data: adsb.lol (ODbL 1.0) or adsb.fi (https://adsb.fi), depending on the chosen source.
