External integration - Ping & Wake-on-LAN

Hi everyone! :waving_hand:

You know the drill: the office PC you need to turn on remotely, and you’re never quite sure if it actually woke up? :sweat_smile: Here’s Ping & Wake-on-LAN: two very popular integrations in Home Assistant (ranked #3 and #7 on @pierre-gilles’s list), combined because they go together. Everything is local.

What it does

  • :laptop: One device per monitored machine (PC, NAS, server, TV, phone
) with:
    • Online yes/no, usable in scene conditions;
    • the latency in ms, with its history;
    • a Power On button via Wake-on-LAN, when the MAC address is known.
  • :magnifying_glass_tilted_left: Add machines manually from the configuration, or via a network search (devices that announce themselves appear in the Discovery tab, with their MAC when Gladys knows it).
  • :mobile_phone: An adjustable « offline » delay per machine, for phones that doze on Wi-Fi.
  • :puzzle_piece: A widget with the status of each machine and the « Power On » buttons.
  • :clapper_board: Two scene actions: « Power On a Device », which can wait for the machine to respond (and gives its boot time), and « Test an Address », without creating a device. Plus a trigger « Device Did Not Power On ».

The cool part

2 a.m. → turn on the NAS, wait for it to respond, start the backup, then notify me :floppy_disk:
« Movie night » scene → the media PC starts, then the TV one minute later :popcorn:
The server is not responding → alert message :police_car_light:

Installation

:warning: Gladys 5.1 minimum.

:light_bulb: It will be available in the store later today. In a hurry? Integrations → Install from GitHub, with the address GitHub - guim31/gladys-ping-wol: Ping and Wake-on-LAN for Gladys Assistant: see which devices are online and wake them up · GitHub

  1. Install the integration by accepting Wake-on-LAN and network search access.
  2. In the configuration: « Add or Modify a Host » (name, IP address, optional MAC), or « Search the Network ».
  3. Discovery tab: add your machines.

Honest caveats: .local names don’t work (use IP address or DNS name), Wake-on-LAN works better wired and must be enabled in the machine’s BIOS, and the wake-up itself hasn’t been tested on a real machine yet. The ping, however, has been verified in a container as locked down as Gladys’s, and if ICMP is blocked on your network, the integration automatically switches to a TCP test.

Like the previous ones, coded with the help of Claude Code :robot:.
