Hi everyone! ![]()
First deliverable of my « North America » series (and the world, actually
): Pirate Weather, the open successor to Dark Sky, as a weather provider for Gladys.
The key is free, the coverage is global, and most importantly: this one, I’ve tested it for real! I ran real API responses through Oklahoma City and Paris, including official alerts ![]()

What it does
- Weather in the Gladys widget and chat, in °C or °F: current conditions, 24-hour and 8-day forecasts, feels like, wind, UV, sunrise and sunset.
- Official alerts (US weather service, Environment Canada, MeteoAlarm…), classified by phenomenon and usable in « Weather Alert » scenes.
- A « rain or snow in the hour » trigger, and a scene action that gives the precipitation for the coming hour.
- A minute-by-minute widget to see the shower coming, in mm/h or in/h.
- A « Test API Key » button that displays the temperature and remaining calls.
The cool thing
Rain in the hour → « Bring in the laundry! » on the phone
Heatwave alert → lower the shutters on the south side before noon
About quota
The free key gives 10,000 calls per month. The integration makes one call per cycle, adjusts itself to stay well below (about 3,000 calls per month for a house), and slows down on its own if the quota is running low.
Installation
Gladys 5.1 minimum.
- Create a free key on pirateweather.net and subscribe to the « forecast » API (count up to 20 minutes before it’s active).
- In Gladys: Integrations → Pirate Weather → Install, paste the key, then Test API Key.
- Check that your house is properly geolocated in Gladys: it’s what gives the position.
Small honest reservation: minute-by-minute forecasts come from a model, not a radar, and alert titles arrive in the language of the national service.
Like the previous ones, it is developed with Claude Code
. Powered by Pirate Weather, an independent project and not affiliated.
