Hi everyone!

After Android TV and Roku, it’s VIZIO’s turn. The brand is almost unavailable in Europe, but it’s one of the most sold in the United States. For those of you who have a VIZIO TV or soundbar over there, everything is controlled locally, without cloud or VIZIO account.

What it does

  • One device per SmartCast TV or soundbar:
    • power on/off, volume, volume + and −, mute;
    • the input, with names set on the TV (« PS5 » instead of « HDMI-2 »);
    • the application: the SmartCast home screen and your favorite apps;
    • « Now Playing »: the app or input currently displayed;
    • the image mode, the sound mode of the soundbar, channel + and −.
  • A trigger « TV: application or input changed ».
  • Three scene actions: open an application, choose an input, send a key.
  • Three widgets: remote control, shortcuts, and keys.
  • In French, English, German, and Spanish.

The cool thing

Netflix opens → the living room goes to 20% and the shutters close
« PS5 » input → Game image mode and ambient light on
11:30 PM and the TV is still on → notification, then shutdown 15 minutes later

Installation

:warning: Gladys 5.1 minimum.

  1. On the TV, set the power mode to Quick Start.
  2. Turn on your devices: they are found on the network. Otherwise, enter their IP address in the configuration.
  3. For each TV: launch « Start pairing », then « Enter the PIN code » with the code displayed on the screen. Soundbars do not need pairing.
  4. Discovery tab: add your devices.

Honest small reservations

  • In Eco mode, a TV in standby cuts its network: Gladys can no longer see it and cannot turn it on. Hence the Quick Start.
  • SmartCast does not say which apps are installed: the list comes from a known catalog of 150 apps, you choose your favorites.
  • The image mode and sound mode only appear if the firmware offers them.
  • Developed without a VIZIO TV. It has been tested on real TV responses published by an open-source project, against a fake TV, but has never spoken to a real one: your feedback is expected.
