As I recall, it was built-in, but it seems that it no longer is. It’s now done via a plugin.

@McFlyPartages Do you have experience with this plugin?
Reading through this whole post, I get the impression that it breaks with every Discourse update. I use other plugins and I don’t recall seeing so many problems, so it’s not reassuring 
I had never signed up because of Google.

Ok thanks, and was it fairly stable? The conversation you shared wasn’t very reassuring, and from experience unstable dependencies in Discourse are a nightmare 
I don’t have any bad memories of it.
Maybe move on to something else afterwards?
Is there any location information in Discourse? Via the Discourse API, Open
