I think it would be great if we could find a solution to make the forum open to everyone: both French speakers and English speakers.
In my opinion, we have a lot to learn from the international dev community (much more active in the open-source world), and it would be a shame if these new interested parties felt rejected on the forum
On the other hand, for the forum, I am against « English only »; it’s good that everyone can speak in their own language, I won’t force anyone to speak English ^^
I don’t know what would be best, though:
create a separate forum? (Different domain)
have categories by language
have tags by language
The issue is that options 2) and 3) don’t solve the problem that the forum may not necessarily be welcoming to a foreigner, and on the other hand, if one day we have more internationals than French, the forum may not be welcoming to the French…
Hello, for my part I would see more of a language mix than a distinction.
The risk of splitting languages across different domains may lead to a multiplicity and redundancy of problems/solutions that ultimately will probably refer to the same subject.
There are now many tools to translate and personally I make this effort when I come across a foreign site to find a solution to my problem.
Tags can however bring a plus without everything getting disorganized.
I don’t know if it is possible to add a translator to the forum that would adapt the language to the user.
It is clear that the fact that Gladys Assistant is in French has encouraged me to look for something other than Domoticz, for which you can find websites in English and French on the web.
I am really interested in what the developers are doing on Gladys. If the forum were in English, I would be less assiduous in reading your comments and exchanges. Similarly, I certainly would not participate.
English does not deter me (I have crossed the Channel several times) but technical terms are not my cup of tea .
When I arrive on a forum or a site that seem interesting for my information search and they contain a bit complicated vocabulary, I use a translator.
Therefore, adding tags seems to be a good solution.
Being able to propose an automatic translation in the language, either of the browser, or chosen by the reader, would be great, naturally.
I would have preferred to see French and English categories, but do as you please, as long as the French stays here, I’m fine with it. I left school in 6th grade, I already struggle with French, so…
I assume the main issue is that « google translate » no longer knows how to translate forums and many other sites. I have the same problem with the forum: https://forums.puri.sm/c/librem/phones
which uses the same software, I have to copy the messages and then paste them into www.deepl.com/translator
In short, not very practical.
Which duplicate are you talking about? As for me, there won’t be any because I don’t understand or read English… That’s also mainly why I’m a beginner in coding.
Indeed, it looks great on Recalbox! Is it possible to do this with Discourse categories/subcategories? I thought that subcategories with discourse were more like tags.
Nickel! To scare people less, wouldn’t we start a few posts in English?
We could imagine a post grouping feature requests in both languages. It would serve as a library. Like a spreadsheet with columns: feature, link, language, and status.
The problem with this kind of post is that it’s potentially outdated quickly ^^ But why not to make a first post, and communicate with the international community
It loses a bit of interest if it’s outside the forum!
I don’t really understand your final idea, because the « feature request » category is already a list in itself, and it is quite often enriched.
It smells like a list that will be up to date for 1 minute when you do it and will be very quickly outdated afterwards…
On the other hand, where there is debate, is whether we make a « feature request » category in the « international » category, and how we manage the requests of the international and the French.
Intuitively, I would have put this category « english only » (as we do on github), but many in the Gladys population do not speak English and it risks blocking some…
