When a column already contains several widgets and you want to add one in the second position, it’s a shame to see it get added at the very bottom and then have to move it up afterward.
I’m copying Pierre-Gilles’s suggestion:
Could this be solved by an easier drag-and-drop that would « compress » the widget sizes, like on mobile, for example?
That’s a very good idea. At the moment it quickly becomes complicated (or lengthy) to do.
Thanks @lmilcent for changing the categories of my topics to « feature request » — I had forgotten. And I discovered along the way the optional tags, including feature-request-ux. So, I simplified my titles ![]()

So I’d like someone to respond to my remark ![]()
so I say yes to compression!
Why not, compression.
But I would have found it more intuitive if an « insert a step » element appeared when my mouse hovered between two steps (I don’t know if I’m being clear…)
I think that would have a greater impact. I even wonder if by default the « edit a dashboard » view shouldn’t display all widgets « collapsed » and that to edit a widget you have to open it.
I see, so a purely desktop behavior (not mobile)
Let’s see what it might look like visually…
What bothers me about this idea is that when widgets are collapsed on mobile (to reorder them) and we’ve chosen not to give names to the widgets, it’s hard to tell what they are. You only see the widget type (‹ Devices ›, ‹ Scenes ›, ‹ Graph ›…) and so you don’t really know which is which…
So I would find it convenient to handle this with a simple « Add + » button between each widget. Or maybe just the « + » in the same blue-colored button, to be more discreet… It would look like this:
What do you think?
Hi,
I like the idea of the « + » in the middle, it doesn’t overload the interface that much but it makes it easy to add a widget in the middle. It would make life a bit easier when building a dashboard!
Hi everyone ![]()
I worked on this development; it was fairly trivial and it’s really convenient!
The result:
