Make a sound play

Hello

I plugged a speaker into my PC and I would like to play pre-recorded sounds on that same PC (intermediate step before text-to-speech (TTS), which will require more skill).

I tried to play a sound but there is nothing in Gladys to do it?

Thanks if you can shed some light on this for me

To do TTS in Gladys, we provide the scene action « Speak on a speaker »:

Currently, it works with Google Cast (notably Google Home speakers, but not limited to them), Apple

What if I connect a Bluetooth speaker, would that work?

Because going through an expensive system while I have a speaker connected to the PC, I find it a shame not to be able to use it.

Thank you

We don’t have the module in Gladys for that right now, neither wired nor Bluetooth.

Honestly, I don’t know if it’s really very practical:

  • Wired means your mini-PC has to be located exactly where you want the sound to come out, and you need a sound system that’s always plugged in and always on.
  • For Bluetooth, you need a Bluetooth speaker that’s always plugged in and that doesn’t lose the connection after a certain time; I don’t even know if that exists.

Connected speakers are designed for this use: you can put one in every room where you want Gladys to be able to speak, and it works all the time.

For info, for my tests I bought a new Nest Mini in 2024 for €20 on Leboncoin:

A quick search today shows that Nest Minis have even dropped in price — you have options from €5, and most are €15–20… Source

OK thanks, I’ll look at that carefully

So are they connected to Google?

You have to set up the speaker with the Google Home app, yes, and yes, you need a Google account.

However:

  • Nothing stops you from setting up the speaker with a throwaway Google account that you create on the spot

I’m chiming in because I’m interested ^^

Given the low prices I’m actually tempted to buy one, you can do some neat things with it. I do have one question though because I see in the features that you can make the speaker speak (that’s cool!), but can you do more basic things? That is to say, for example, send a sound (an alarm, for example) or music?

Currently, we don’t have a scene action « Play a sound on a speaker », but with a small PR, it’s possible

Indeed, anything is possible with imagination!
I might give in and buy this speaker (my wife is going to be happy )

Well, I received a used Google Home speaker for €20

As soon as I can I’ll test it to play a sound. Can’t wait to make Gladys speak
