Gladys Assistant 4.43: Gladys can speak on any Google speaker 🗣️

Hello everyone!

New Gladys release today with a new integration: Google Cast!

If you have Google devices compatible with the Google Cast protocol:

You can discover these devices on the local network:

Add them to Gladys, and use these speakers in scenes to speak through them:

Result:

Feel free to test this feature and give me your feedback

For now, this feature uses a paid « Text to Speech Â» API, which works thanks to artificial intelligence. That’s what enables this smooth, pleasant-to-hear, non-robotic voice.

Therefore, this feature is only available through Gladys Plus.

The day high-quality voices like these exist purely locally, I would be very happy to add them to Gladys, but unfortunately that’s not the case in French today. I’m keeping an eye on open-source projects working on these topics

The full CHANGELOG is available here.

How to update?

If you installed Gladys with the official Raspberry Pi OS image, your instances will update automatically within the next few hours. This may take up to 24h, don’t panic.

If you installed Gladys with Docker, make sure you are using Watchtower (See the documentation)

@pierre-gilles the documentation page https://gladysassistant.com/fr/docs/integrations/googleCast/ is not available (404)

I was able to test Google Cast — it found my TCL TV and my Freebox Pop, which have Google Assistant. It works, but it’s not usable day-to-day: each message stops the video playback and you have to manually exit the app on the TV. I hope for the same with Alexa so I can use my Echo Dots.

@cicoub13 Indeed, good catch — my bad, I missed that! I’m not on Gladys today but I’ll fix it on my next day

@elfedagger Indeed, it returns all devices that are capable of casting, but it doesn’t necessarily make sense for each one. On Google speakers it works very well though ^^

For Alexa, I’ll see depending on demand. I looked into it a bit and the way it works has nothing to do with Google’s; I don’t think it’s possible locally — you’ll have to go through the cloud via the Gladys Plus integration.

I also hope for the same thing on HomePod  :
