External integration - DWD (official German weather alerts)

Hi everyone!

This one is especially for our German friends (the forum translates each message, so read it in your language): here is DWD, the official weather alerts from the Deutscher Wetterdienst in Gladys. In Home Assistant, more than 4% of installations use it, with Germany being the top country for HA. The data is open, free, without an account or key.

What it does

  • A device per zone: each house located in Germany (based on its position), or a municipality or district entered manually. It provides the current alert level (0 to 4), the upcoming level, the number of alerts, the main alert and its type, usable in scene conditions.
  • A « DWD Alerts Â» widget: now, upcoming, the list of alerts with their period, and the official text with instructions by touching an alert.
  • Two triggers: « alert issued Â», filterable by level and type (thunderstorm, wind, rain, snow, ice, heat…), with the title, period, description, and instructions in variables; and « alert lifted Â».
  • An action « Current DWD Alerts Â», with a summary ready to send.

The cool part

Level 3 or 4 alert → message « {title} from {start} to {end} Â» and shutters closed
Wind or thunderstorm from level 2 → « Put away the garden furniture Â»
Every morning at 7 a.m., if there is an alert → the summary on Telegram

Installation

Gladys 5.1 minimum.

It will arrive in the store at the next indexer run. In the meantime: Integrations → Install from GitHub, with the address GitHub - guim31/gladys-dwd: Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) official weather warnings for Gladys Assistant · GitHub

  1. Accept access to the position of the houses (a house in Germany is found automatically), or enter the identifier of a municipality (the action « Find an alert cell Â» provides it).
  2. Add the devices from the Discovery tab.
  3. To have the names in German, set the integration language to « Deutsch Â».

Honest small reservations: only Germany, the detailed texts remain in German (the only language of the DWD data), and the reading is done every 10 minutes by default. This is not an official alert system: NINA and WarnWetter remain the reference. It has been tested on real DWD data, but not yet in a real Gladys.

Coded with the help of Claude Code. Data: Deutscher Wetterdienst. Independent project, not affiliated with the DWD.

@ruegerth, if you could take a look, your feedback would be appreciated

Oh shoot, we developed the module twice

Oh crap… Claude was supposed to check before starting!
I can withdraw mine without any problem!

I added the few things I forgot to my integration, which is based on yours, so I think you can remove yours.

@pierre-gilles’s table should probably be updated more regularly to avoid duplicates

Normally my Claude doesn’t rely on Pierre-Gilles’ table but on the forum messages. Maybe we started at the same time ^^

I’ll take care of removing mine quickly

As @guim31 said, our « je prends XXX Â» messages help avoid this situation
But there was a slip-up, it happens, it’s not serious!

It’s done on my side: I’m removing my DWD, it will disappear from the store. For German weather, it’s @lmilcent’s integration that should be used :backhand_index_pointing_right: [Intégration externe] DWD (Deutscher Wetterdienst) : météo allemande, avertissements officiels, pollens, UV et radar

Thanks for picking up the small oversights, and sorry for the duplicate! I’ve strengthened the checks on my side: we read the thread just before starting, and again just before publishing.

@guim31 Of course, it’s coming

@guim31 @lmilcent

I’ll just respond to both of you here:

I was sitting here with my Node Red and painstakingly fetching and evaluating XML files, what a hassle, and then you two come along and look here:

Both integrations with their widgets among each other. Regarding weather warnings, no major differences. So far, they work perfectly, we just haven’t had a storm yet

My suggestions for improvement:

  • For some widgets, I had to enter the location of the house again in the widget, even though it was already selected in the configuration?
  • The display of pollen does not make sense if all are at 0, where is the rest or why are only three shown. Here, one could limit it to active pollen, because grasses are in summer and trees in spring or similar. Or all are zero.
  • I find the location and time information great, they are consistent and correctly assigned for my location.

And maybe someone else feels like tapping into the Federal Environment Agency? They have a similar location division and provide the AQI, i.e. the Air Quality Index for particulate matter, ozone, etc… then you would have a fine-grained pollen, weather and air widget for Germany and much more accurate than a superficial look from Openweathermap.

But all in all, I am enthusiastic about your work, very well done. I will try scene control soon.

Greetings

Tom

I’m closing this because I removed my integration :+1:
