Hi everyone!
Gladys’s RTSP camera is great, but you need to find the stream URL, and you don’t have the camera’s orientation or detections. Here’s ONVIF, the protocol spoken by most IP cameras and recorders: Hikvision, Dahua, Amcrest, Reolink, Tapo, VIGI, Axis, Foscam… It’s 5.2% of Home Assistant installations, and everything works locally.
What it does
- Automatic discovery of network cameras, with backup address entry, and up to three ONVIF accounts.
- One device per video source (a recorder gives one device per channel), with its image, without searching for a URL.
- For motorized cameras: orientation and zoom, and saved positions with their names.
- Detection sensors when the camera provides them: motion, person, vehicle, animal, line crossing, intrusion, sabotage.
- An « ONVIF Camera » widget: image, detections, and four buttons.
- A trigger « ONVIF Camera Detection », and two actions: bring a camera to a saved position and make it rotate.
The cool part
At night, a person detected in the garden → image on Telegram and outdoor lighting turned on
Empty house → the living room camera looks at the front door; upon return, it turns towards the wall
Installation
Gladys 5.1 minimum.
It will arrive in the store at the next indexer update. In the meantime: Integrations → Install from GitHub, with the address GitHub - guim31/gladys-onvif: ONVIF IP cameras for Gladys Assistant: snapshots, PTZ, presets and motion events, on the local network · GitHub
- In the configuration, enter the ONVIF account of your cameras (often to be created in their web interface).
- Open the Discovery tab and add your cameras.
Honest caveats: these are images, not video (one every 10 seconds at best), only Profile S cameras are supported, and positions are recalled but not created from Gladys. A camera that only listens to multicast will not be found alone: enter its address.
I developed it without a real camera: it was tested against a real independent ONVIF server and two simulated cameras (a Tapo with a real video stream and a Hikvision) in containers. Give me the brand and model of your camera in your feedback, it will help a lot.
