Hi everyone!
When I proposed Gladys Music (Gladys Music : demander à Gladys de jouer n'importe quelle musique, sur n'importe quelle enceinte), I said I would connect some initial sources on my side. Here is the first step: Radio Browser, the free directory of web radios. About 50,000 stations from all over the world, no account or key required. FIP to wake up, does that sound good to you? ^^
What it does
- A search in the directory by name, country, language, or genre, from the Configuration tab.
- Your favorite stations become Gladys devices (up to 50):
- the online or offline stream, the bitrate, the codec, and the stream address;
- the country, language, genres, website, and logo of the station.
- A « Favorite Radios » widget: the logos, the country, the codec, and an online/offline badge. When the stream is in https, a link allows you to listen to it directly in the browser.
- Two scene actions: « Get a radio stream » (one of your favorites) and « Choose a random radio » (by genre, country, or language).
- In French, English, German, and Spanish.
Let’s be honest: the integration does not start playing on its own. In Gladys today, an integration cannot control the speaker of another integration, and « play a notification » is not meant for that (on Sonos, the speaker returns to what it was playing after 20 seconds). To listen, we therefore use a two-action scene: « Get a radio stream », then the « Play a URL on a DLNA player » action of the DLNA integration, with {{0.0.stream_url}} as the address. What is missing is exactly the Gladys Music core component: an action « play this address on this speaker », valid for all integrations. The day it exists, no need for two steps, and the widget will have a real play button.
The cool part
7 a.m. on weekdays → « Get a radio stream » (FIP), then « Play a URL on a DLNA player » on the bedroom amp
10 a.m. on Sunday → « Choose a random radio », jazz genre, on the kitchen speaker
Installation
Gladys 5.1 minimum.
It will arrive in the store at the next indexer run. In the meantime: Integrations → Install from GitHub, with https://github.com/guim31/gladys-radio-browser
- Configuration tab: « Search for a station », for example « FIP ».
- « Add to favorites » with the result number.
- Discovery tab: add the station to Gladys.
- To listen: the two-action scene above, with the DLNA integration (or any integration that can play an address from a scene).
Honest small reservations
- No direct playback for now, as explained above: you need a two-action scene and a player capable of playing an address.
- The « online » status comes from the verification that the directory does, about once a day: it is not a live stream listen.
- Only PNG, JPEG, or WebP logos are displayed. Many stations only have an
.icoicon, which Gladys does not display. - Removing a favorite does not delete its device in Gladys: you have to do it manually.
- I checked from my place that the real API responds: the list of servers, the « FIP » and « France Inter » searches, and FIP well online at 192 kbit/s. However, it has not yet run in a real Gladys instance, nor chained with DLNA: your feedback interests me a lot.
