Hi everyone! ![]()
The little orange cone is on almost every computer in the world, and it also makes a great web radio player on an old PC or a Raspberry Pi connected to a speaker. So here is VLC: controlling VLC media player from Gladys, locally.
What it does
- One device per VLC (up to three): title, artist, album (including the current track from a web radio), playback status, progress, remaining time, volume, and the play, pause, stop, previous, next, and mute buttons.
- The Music widget in Gladys works with it, and there is also a « VLC Player » widget with the cover and four buttons.
- The « Speak on a Speaker » action in Gladys plays your announcements on VLC, then the music resumes automatically where it left off.
- Four scene triggers: playback started, paused, resumed, stopped.
- Two scene actions: « Play an address in VLC » (a web radio, a file, a stream; live, replacing the playlist or in sequence) and « Clear the playlist ».
- In French, English, German, and Spanish.
The cool thing
7 a.m. → the morning web radio starts at 20%, and the volume goes up ten minutes later
The movie starts → the living room lights dim; pause → they come back up
Someone rings the doorbell → pause, announcement « Someone is at the door », then the music resumes
Installation
Gladys 5.1 minimum.
It will arrive in the store at the next indexer update. In the meantime: Integrations → Install from GitHub, with GitHub - guim31/gladys-vlc: VLC media player control for Gladys Assistant: playback, volume, now playing, play a URL · GitHub
- In VLC: Tools → Preferences, bottom left Show settings: All, then Interface → Main interfaces: check Web, and in Lua, choose a password. Save and restart VLC. (On a server:
cvlc --intf http --http-password …) - In Gladys: the IP address of the machine and this password.
- Discovery tab: add your VLC.
Honest small reservations
- Tested against a real VLC 3 under Linux (files, web radios, covers, announcements, VLC that you close and restart), but not yet under Windows or macOS: your feedback is welcome.
- No automatic discovery (VLC does not announce itself on the network), you have to enter the address.
- Mute is a volume at 0 (VLC does not give the status of its mute), no movement within a media or shuffle.
