Hello everyone!
Still in the self-hosting series, for those who have a NAS or a home server. I loved setting up Sonarr & Radarr, but often there’s a Usenet client running in the background: here’s SABnzbd and NZBGet in Gladys, locally.
What it does
- One device per client, up to two:
- a « Downloads on Pause» switch;
- a « Speed Limit» slider in % of your line;
- the speed, the queue, what’s left to download, and the remaining time;
- the free disk space;
- the state (Downloading, Paused, Post-processing, Queued, Idle, Unreachable), the name of the last download, and the errors of the last 24 hours.
- Two triggers: « Download Completed» and « Download Failed», filterable by client and by category, with the name, size, or reason for failure.
- Three actions: pause (for X minutes or until resume), resume, and limit speed.
- A « Usenet Downloads» widget: speed, queue, and remaining time, with the Pause, Pause 30 min, and Resume buttons.
- In French, English, German, and Spanish.
The cool part
A video call starts in the agenda → one-hour pause, the line is all yours
7:00 PM → limit to 30%; 11:00 PM → back to 100%
Download completed in thetvcategory → « Your episode is ready »
Installation
Gladys 5.1 minimum.
It will arrive in the store at the next indexer update. In the meantime: Integrations → Install from GitHub, with GitHub - guim31/gladys-usenet: SABnzbd and NZBGet Usenet downloaders for Gladys Assistant · GitHub
- For SABnzbd, get the API key: Config → General → Security → API Key (not the NZB key just below, which is only for adding tasks). For NZBGet, the control username and password: Settings → Security → ControlUsername and ControlPassword.
- In Gladys: the software, the address with its port (8080 for SABnzbd, 6789 for NZBGet), the key or credentials, and the speed of your line if you want to limit in percentage (essential for NZBGet, and for SABnzbd when its « Maximum line speed » is not set). Then Test the connection.
- Discovery tab: add your clients.
Honest small reservations
- No task management: nothing is added, removed, or reordered. Pause, resume, and speed limit, that’s all.
- Up to two clients.
- A rejected SABnzbd key is not retried in a loop (each rejection leaves a warning in SABnzbd): after correction, save or click Test the connection.
- NZBGet resumes a timed pause with up to about 25 seconds delay, that’s how it works.
- Tested against real SABnzbd 4.2.2 and 5.1.3 and a real NZBGet 26.3, launched for the occasion with a small test Usenet server: real downloads, successful and failed, properly triggered the scenes. NZBGet 21 is only covered by its recorded responses (its package crashed on me before the integration had anything to check). Not yet tried with a real Usenet provider, nor in a real Gladys installation: your feedback is welcome.
Like the previous ones, developed with Claude Code. Independent project, not affiliated with SABnzbd or NZBGet.
