This will be more of an information request, before talking about a feature request.
ZigBee had initialized the CHIP alliance, which became MATTER at the end of 2020.
The goal of this alliance, consisting of hundreds of manufacturers of home automation modules around the world, is to unify and ensure communication between all components of a home automation installation.
My question therefore concerns the information you have about this « protocol » and your involvement in what appears to be the future of home automation.
Surprised to have no response on a topic that seems important to me and whose first components are coming to market next month. Moreover, it is announced that backward compatibility of components will be ensured (?).
The advent of the official code is planned before the end of 2021. Its primary purpose is to facilitate communication between all components and protocols of a home automation installation. The first version of the Matter protocol specification will run on Wi-Fi and Thread network layers; it will use Bluetooth Low Energy for commissioning.
The code is open source and available on the Github link above.
This standardization attempt brings together major players from around the world. For example, in France, Legrand, EDF, Leroy-Merlin, etc.
I donât think anyone here is part of the working group that finalized the Matter protocol specifications; only the big players like Amazon/Google and manufacturers (Philips, Xiaomi, etc.) participated.
Their website https://buildwithmatter.com/ is very nice, but itâs just a showcase. When you dig a bit, the open-source project is very active, but not yet in a stable version.
So even if the specifications are available, no technology implements it, and no tool exists that we could integrate into Gladys today.
I find the Matter project very interesting (promising in terms of features and compatibility with a maximum of devices and types of networks), and Iâm sure @pierre-gilles will be interested in integrating it into Gladys, but Iâm afraid weâll have to wait a few months before we can start working with this protocol. By the way, if youâre interested in contributing at that time, donât hesitate to let us know.
(Donât be « surprised » not to get answers in 3 days, especially during a vacation period like now.)
Thanks @cicoub13, I agree with you when you talk about the projectâs maturity. However, in my opinion, it seems interesting to follow its evolution, especially since Philips has already announced the availability of Hue products for next September and that the first official version of the protocol should be operational before the end of 2021.
That being said, I do not expect a miraculous product from its release. It just seems to me that it is important to follow this project with interest.
Iâm jumping on this post, completely agree with @cicoub13
The initiative is super interesting, and if it works, it will make our lives much easier Weâre all following closely.
However, until a developer kit is available, and no devices are available on the market, itâs impossible to do a Gladys integration.
Weâll see in 2022!
I just hope that the final devices will be open enough for open-source programs like Gladys to plug into them.
I know that Matter is open-source, but the protocol brick being open-source doesnât necessarily mean that the final products are open. (And the certification program story isnât necessarily reassuring, weâll see!)
