RETEX backup gladys

Hello !!

I’m making this post just to give a little feedback on this feature, which is honestly very handy ^^.

I restored a backup the other day and everything worked very well, great!
But, and it’s a big but!

Indeed, it’s the kind of thing that’s important for user trust!
The minimum would be a message saying that it will take some time + a message when it’s finished… the best would be a progress bar

Thanks for your feedback @spenceur! Cool

Yes, but if you can know the size of the file to restore you can calculate the ratio of downloaded size to total size and copied size to total size and display the ratio. The time for decryption and unzipping may not be much of the total; at most show the elapsed time since the process start time and the file size (which kind of indicates that for a large file it can take some time), or alternatively store the processing time of the last restore and display it.

Indeed, I am talking about a restore on an existing instance — I hadn’t specified that, actually ^^’

Hello,

I quite agree, the feature itself is great but I noticed the same thing some time ago when I reinstalled my instance from scratch and restored via the « from Gladys Plus » connection.

I ended up on a temp-user session without any indication.

So I logged out and logged back in with my local account to see if it was better and if the restoration was finished but it failed: the restoration was in progress and only the temp-user account had been created (for temporary use).

I began to understand the system with the use of a temporary user for the restoration when I checked the size of the SQLite DB which was increasing but with no indication in the UI, it wasn’t obvious to understand and I think a regular user would have quickly given up and been frustrated

My connection isn’t great so the restoration took quite a while, which is why I had time to debug to understand what was happening

A banner-style message on the UI would be really good to inform the user that their restoration is in progress whether on an existing instance or a fresh one via the Gladys Getting Started page

(a progress percentage would be a plus  )

I created a GitHub issue based on your feedback

I can’t guarantee anything about this development, it’s still a lot of work

I absolutely don’t doubt it  it’s just feedback for improvement
It’s up to you to decide whether it’s a priority. We won’t be on it constantly unless it’s a defective Raspberry Pi ^^’
