New documentation: Recommended hardware to get started!

Hello everyone!

I have just published new documentation to better explain what hardware I recommend to get started with Gladys.

The idea behind this tutorial was to propose a recommendation for an « ideal home automation box », under 100€ and with stable hardware for the long term, namely based on an external SSD drive and not an SD card.

The tutorial is available in the documentation:

Feel free to share your feedback or suggest improvements

For a beginner, it’s incomprehensible:

However, it’s always practical to have a micro-SD card on hand, especially to flash the bootloader of the Pi during the first installation.

Perhaps it should be rephrased as « to be able to start the system for the first installation »?

Otherwise, it’s very clear, with the prices clearly displayed, it’s great!

I’ve rephrased it  Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks!

Hello @pierre-gilles

Just a post of encouragement because with his videos and tutorials the project is gaining momentum, I think, and this will allow more people to get interested in it.

Keep it up, it’s really great. :muscle: :muscle: :muscle:

Thanks @jerome it’s a pleasure! For now, my efforts seem to be paying off. Since I’ve invested time in communications, downloads and installations are on a clear upward trend

After that, it’s about maintaining this over the long term. I hope it continues!

Having tried Domoticz, Jeedom, Home Assistant, I think the niche occupied by Gladys is unique to Gladys, that is to say ease of setup (for those who know the Myfox alarm/home automation solution, unfortunately taken over by Somfy, we are at the same level of ergonomics)! :slightly_smiling_face:

@pierre-gilles For the ad, you could try contacting the radio show Libre à vous specializing in free software, which seems to be the case for Gladys.
The show is produced by April, they ask for and look for topics to cover and I have never heard them talk about home automation.
They often rebroadcast, the shows are transcribed to be indexed by Google and they are broadcast as podcasts.
For my part, I listen to the podcasts.

Thanks for the recommendation I will check it out!

You can also suggest this variant that allows, in a larger case, to have a backup power supply and a real on/off button plus the RTC

Great, it allows you to have a kind of home automation box for intrusion detection that remains active even in case of a power outage.
All it needs now is the ability to send SMS and it’s perfect!

Oh well for SMS there is this!

It’s true that combined with the rest it makes a Gladys Very sure  that you master!!! :exploding_head:

Raspberry Pi Connectivity, compatible with Raspberry Pi 2B / 3B / 3B + / Zero / Zero W

After that, I know there are USB keys for that, it’s more the configuration part and the creation of a service that I’m questioning here!

The company that manufactures it is in France, contact them to ensure compatibility, but it seems to be compatible with all versions of Raspberry Pi

Hello @pierre-gilles, I just sent a message to the show « Libre à Vous » as mentioned earlier.
We’ll see if he contacts you.

Awesome, thanks!

Hello @pierre-gilles

Below is the message I sent to Libre à vous and their response.

Your message
Hello Libre à vous and April.
I am a faithful listener to your podcast show.
As at the end of your shows you inform us that we can share
topics to be discussed and that I have not yet heard you talk about home automation
and a search on the libreavous.org website confirmed that the subject has never
been addressed, I therefore allow myself this message.
I am a simple user of Gladys Assistant, an open-source home automation software (French) that respects your privacy and runs on Raspberry pi.
All information remains with you, unlike an Alexa or Google Home.
Moreover, Pierre-Gilles Leymarie (the creator of Gladys) is very transparent about
Gladys’ activity, the revenue generated with Gladys+ or the affiliate links, he is
very responsive on the forum and takes into account the remarks of the users.
Decisions about the evolution of the software are made after consultation with the
volunteer developers and the community.
For my part, I am not a developer, I can only report bugs, help on
the forum if I can and propose improvements.
I can also do some advertising for him to discover the project and increase the
user community;
This is why I am sending you this message.
Because Gladys is easy to use, it is capable of running many
protocols and every time a person turns to Gladys rather than to
Alexa or Google Home, it is a bit of our privacy that we will have found again.

Please accept, madam, sir, the expression of my best sentiments.

Hello,

First of all: thank you for your faithful listening

Thank you also for this proposal, we have indeed not yet addressed this subject,
and at first glance the example of Gladys would fit perfectly in our show.

We will discuss this at our next team meeting, I will not fail to let you know the progress of our reflections,
and possibly propose that you intervene as a user if you are interested? (depending on how the subject eventually takes shape).

Freely,

Étienne Gonnu,
Public affairs mission manager for April

Awesome!! Thanks @bjm for taking the time, and keep me updated

Don’t hesitate to CC me if needed (hello at gladysassistant point com)

In the message I put your email, in the reply it does not appear, maybe the form deleted it as it was in quotes.
Still, keep an eye on your emails if you receive a message from:

I take this opportunity to share the list of journalists I have contacted since the launch of v4, some contacted at launch, others more recently:

Most of them wrote articles at the launch of v4, after which I never contacted them again for minor version launches (except for a few bloggers I know well, like @Technoseb27)

A press release tells a story, it needs an occasion.

At the launch of v4, it was a great occasion, but for minor versions, not all journalists are necessarily interested in writing an article for each minor version.

To get coverage again, I see two possibilities:

  • Issue a press release about a milestone: « Already 500 homes equipped with Gladys Assistant » (we are at 492 according to the project in numbers page: Gladys Assistant en chiffre | Gladys Assistant, it can happen quite quickly if we continue this momentum). This will be the time to summarize the developments of the last year, and it’s an opportunity to show that the project is growing. It’s more impactful than « Gladys v4.5.2 is available » (not very interesting).

  • Manage to involve some journalists enough to have a test of Gladys, but I have already tried and it’s really very difficult, they never have the time (or at least they don’t prioritize it). To have a test of Gladys, I think they would need to « feel » the need: their community insisting: when will there be a test of Gladys? On this, maybe you could help by showing to the different media that you use that content about Gladys interests you! (comments, Twitter, etc…)
