New Raspberry Pi image + installation tutorial

Hello everyone,

I’ve published a new Gladys image for Raspberry Pi, compatible with the Pi 3, 4, and 5.

This image is based on Raspberry Pi OS Trixie (Debian 13), 64-bit. It is available directly in Raspberry Pi Imager, in the Home automation category.

For the occasion, I’ve also rewritten the installation tutorial on the website, with all the steps illustrated step by step: :backhand_index_pointing_right: Installation sur un Raspberry Pi | Gladys Assistant

My opinion on the Raspberry Pi

I’ll be honest: I still don’t think the Raspberry Pi is the best option in the long run: a mini-PC remains more powerful and more reliable for daily use.

I also strongly advise against using a micro-SD card: in practice, data corruption often occurs after a few months. If you’re going with a Pi, plan for an NVMe SSD instead.

But for users who already have a Pi on hand, it’s an excellent way to discover Gladys without dealing with Docker or the command line

Next steps

I continue to focus heavily on distribution and look for ways to make Gladys easier to install, regardless of the hardware you have.

The goal is for as many people as possible to try Gladys and form their own opinion!

I’m trying to work on a « Ubuntu + Gladys » image that would allow Gladys to be installed on a mini-PC with fewer steps than a classic Ubuntu installation.

If you have ideas to make Gladys more accessible and easier to install, I’m all ears!

It’s a very good thing to offer a turnkey distribution. I don’t think your idea is to go as far as making a HA OS either.

To make Gladys more accessible, maybe it’s about making it available in as many App Stores as possible, with a focus on NAS where it makes the most sense.

No indeed, I like the idea that the OS remains a « stock » OS, which leaves the user free to install other self-hosted programs (file storage, photos, etc…)

I agree :+1:

After that, on this point I could really use some help :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I think it’s always better that the integration is done (or at least validated) by someone who actually has the NAS in question, in order to properly test the result in real conditions.

So if anyone has a NAS that is not yet supported by Gladys, and has an « app store » or a package system allowing installation, please speak up :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
