[TUTORIAL] Mail in the mailbox

Project: Mail in the Mailbox

Hello community,

Today I present you a very simple and very inexpensive tutorial but which provides many services, especially when it rains as often as it does in Normandy. :cloud_with_rain: :umbrella:

I assume I’m not the only one who hates going to the mailbox in bad weather and to see that the mailbox is empty. So I had the idea of integrating a sensor and then Gladys notifies me via a notification and via Telegram.

For this project, if you are interested, you will need:

1x Door Opening Sensor (cost around €10 on AliExpress)

Prerequisites:

  • XIAOMI integration (requires a gateway - see installation here)

or

  • ZIGBEE2MQTT integration (see installation here)

  • Optional: Telegram (for those who want to receive their notifications on their phones)

Step 1: Integration

Install one of the two integrations above depending on your installation method and associate your sensor.

Now that it is recognized, we can move on to the next step.

Step 2: Create a Scene

We will create a scene to notify us that mail has arrived in the mailbox

To do this, follow the screenshots below

And that’s it, this tutorial is finished and you will no longer get wet.

A few photos to show you:

Hello, thanks for your tutorial :+1:

Personally, I would add one for the packages

I admit I thought about it. But I’m going to try positioning it differently to possibly do both, but I’m not sure it will work.

I thought about that too. But I wonder about the distance between the mailbox and the house for sensor detection.

For my part, I have about 25 meters between the mailbox and the house (Xiaomi gateway), it works very well.

Have you had it for a long time?

I’m wondering about the operating temperatures and humidity. See if over time it doesn’t degrade too much.

I was a bit scared but even with the winter nickel, the battery hardly moves. I must have had it for about a year. Battery at 60%.

The problem is rather with the magnet’s adhesion, which doesn’t hold up, it falls off from time to time.

Enjoy the hot glue  in addition to the double-sided

The glue will hold in cold and humid weather and the double-sided for the summer

I really like this tutorial very much, however I can’t find how to activate the Gladys interface via Docker to use this tutorial.

If someone could enlighten me, I’d be grateful.

Thanks

Hello, it seems like another topic
But explain to us in detail what you have done, from the beginning. And if I’m right, I will write an article for you.

Hello @Gansbourg

Your question is not directly related to the tutorial, but can you be more specific so the community can help you.

Best regards

Thank you

I only have a Mac and Docker.

I start Docker, copy the code, it starts but there is no graphical interface for Gladys, is this normal?

Thank you

Hello @Gansbourg

I suggest you open this topic on the forum if you can’t or don’t find an answer and come back to this topic later if you have questions about this tutorial to avoid going off topic please.

Thank you, good luck. By searching, we always end up finding. Believe me, I sometimes spend hours on it.

Hello
Thank you for this tutorial, I did everything today, but I am using a presence sensor.
My problem is that I sent a message but nothing arrives or leaves???
Did I miss something?
Pascal

I also use a presence sensor: be careful, it’s not always functional when you receive a simple letter. I have a Xiaomi that doesn’t always alert me when I receive a letter or a flyer, but it does every time for a package

Is the Telegram service well configured? Do you have messages in the « discussion Â» part of Gladys?

good evening, no I don’t have telegram, I thought I had an email listed in the user configuration

I don’t think Gladys sends emails by default, either via the web interface or via Telegram.
Now we just need to develop an email module

Hello @pascal_sapin, @lmilcent

The door opening detector works great, except when the person who puts the flyers damages the sensor. But alerts are well received as soon as the flap is lifted via Telegram.

No email indeed, to be seen with pierre-gilles if the development is planned but not currently to my knowledge.

Hello
Thank you for the reply,
I created a Telegram account and entered the API key, it works when launching the scene manually, but after sensor detection, nothing happens. This morning, on the other hand, there were many messages from the middle of the night and also this morning but with a lot of delay. I chose the motion sensor option for the mailbox so that I can stick it high up in the box at the back, no risk.

I also took a look at the Zigbee sensor settings in a certain tab « status Â» I think, it shows false or thru when a detection occurs, so it works, so it’s still stuck somewhere in the chain.

Two tips for you, as I’ve already had these issues:

  • Place the sensor on the side, at the entrance of the mailbox.
This way, it won’t pick up movements from outside (in my case, there is no « flap Â» covering the opening).
  • Make sure to check the option « Run only when the threshold is crossed (and not for each value sent) Â». Otherwise, you will receive multiple messages at once for a single movement.
