Hi everyone!

This one comes from the other side of the Atlantic: the ecobee thermostat, it’s a bit like the Netatmo of Americans and Canadians, with its small room sensors that you place everywhere. If you are in Quebec or have family equipped there, it arrives in Gladys.

What it does

  • One device per thermostat, and its SmartSensor sensors:
    • temperature, humidity, and presence in each room;
    • heating and cooling setpoints, the mode (off, heat, cool, auto), and what the system is doing (heating, cooling, idle, ventilation);
    • the comfort mode (Home, Away, Sleep, Schedule) and the ongoing hold, in short (« Hold until 18:00 », « Vacation until… »).
  • From Gladys: setpoint, mode, ventilation, comfort mode, and resume schedule. Like in the ecobee app, a change lasts by default until the next period.
  • Three scene actions: „Go on vacation“, „Cancel vacation“ and „Comfort mode for a duration“.
  • Two triggers: presence detected / no one in the whole house (thermostat and sensors combined), and „New ecobee alert“ (filter reminder, maintenance…).
  • A thermostat widget with the + and − buttons, the mode, and the comfort mode.
  • In °C or °F, and in French, English, German, and Spanish.

The cool thing

Armed alarm → Away mode until further notice; disarmed alarm → resume schedule
New ecobee alert → message with the alert text (the famous filter reminder)
Window open for 5 minutes → thermostat off; window closed → heating

Installation

:warning: Gladys 5.2 minimum.

  1. Enter the email and password of the ecobee app, then save.
  2. If your account has two-step verification, launch the action „Enter the verification code“ with the code from your authentication app or SMS.
  3. Discovery tab: add your thermostats and sensors.

If you still have an old ecobee developer key, it also works, with a PIN code to validate on ecobee.com.

Honest small reservations

  • Cloud only, with a read every 3 minutes at best.
  • ecobee no longer provides developer keys as of 2024: the connection therefore goes through the same path as the ecobee web portal. If ecobee changes something on their side, it can break until an update.
  • Two-step verification by notification or email link is not supported (authentication app or SMS only).
  • No air quality, no humidifier, or fresh air ventilation for now.
  • Developed without a thermostat. I checked from my place that the connection to the real ecobee service goes as far as the proper refusal of a fake account, but nothing has run on a real ecobee: if you have one, your feedback interests me a lot.
