Hello everyone!
Self-hosting series, part two. After Sonarr & Radarr movies, we’re moving on to the table: Mealie, the recipe manager that many of you run on a NAS or a home server, with its meal planning and shopping lists. Gladys can now read the menu… and write to the shopping list.
What it does
- A Mealie device: today’s and tomorrow’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the number of recipes, and for each shopping list the number of items to buy.
- Scene actions:
- add an item to the shopping list, never in duplicate (« milk » and « Milk » are the same);
- check off an item;
- add a recipe to the schedule, chosen by name or randomly selected by Mealie;
- read the meals of a day or a shopping list, to send in a message.
- Two widgets: « Menu » (same day or next 7 days, with a Schedule button) and « Shopping List » (Add and Check buttons, directly from the wall tablet).
- In French, English, German, and Spanish.
The cool part
A button near the fridge → « Milk » on the shopping list
Every day at 7:30 a.m. → the day’s menu in a message
5 p.m. and nothing planned for dinner → Mealie picks one at random, Gladys announces it
Installation
Gladys 5.2 minimum. (for the widget forms)
It will arrive in the store at the next indexer run. In the meantime: Integrations → Install from GitHub, with GitHub - guim31/gladys-mealie: Mealie recipes, meal plan and shopping lists for Gladys Assistant · GitHub
- In Mealie: your avatar → profile → API Tokens, give it a name (
Gladys) and click Generate. Copy it right away, Mealie only shows it once. - In Gladys: the Mealie address (the one from your browser, including the port) and the token, then Test the connection.
- Discovery tab: add the Mealie device.
Honest small reservations
- One household: that of the token user, who acts with their rights on the schedule and lists.
- No triggers: everything that moves in Mealie is already a device state.
- Items are added as free text (the quantity is not parsed) and never deleted: checked items remain in Mealie until you delete them there.
- Snacks, drinks, and desserts require Mealie 3.7; Mealie 1.x is not supported.
- Tested against real Mealie 2.0.0 and 3.28, launched for the occasion and filled with recipes, menus, and lists, including writing. Not yet seen in a real Gladys installation (the widget forms in particular), nor with PostgreSQL or behind a reverse proxy: your feedback is welcome.
By the way, thanks to the new integration tracking by @Will_71, I discovered that Aymeric had started a Mealie integration in September (AymericLeFeyer/gladys-mealie), never published to the store. I hadn’t seen it before I started: if you’re reading this, Aymeric, don’t hesitate to compare, take what you like, or tell me if you prefer we combine our efforts.
Like the previous ones, developed with Claude Code. Independent project, not affiliated with Mealie.
