Hi everyone!
Still in the « French home » series: the electric grid. RTE continuously publishes where our electricity comes from and how much CO₂ it emits, and warns when the grid is strained with EcoWatt. This allows you to run the dishwasher when the electricity is cleanest, or stop charging your car on a very cold night.
What it does
- A « French Electric Grid » device, no account or key required, updated every quarter hour:
- the CO₂ rate in g/kWh, with Gladys’ colored dot;
- national consumption;
- the low-carbon share and the renewable share;
- the share of nuclear, hydro, wind, solar, bioenergy, gas, and coal, and exchanges with neighbors.
- An « EcoWatt » device, with a free RTE key: the day’s, next day’s, and current hour’s signal.
- A « Announced EcoWatt Alert » trigger: one orange or red day announced, once per announcement.
- A widget: CO₂, consumption, EcoWatt, CO₂ curve over 24 hours, and the mix in bars.
- In French, English, German, and Spanish.
The cool part
CO₂ below 40 g/kWh between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. → dishwasher or car charging
Red day announced for tomorrow → message to the whole house
EcoWatt orange or red hour → charging stopped, and restarted when the signal drops
Installation
Gladys 5.1 minimum.
It will arrive in the store at the next indexer run. In the meantime: Integrations → Install from GitHub, with GitHub - guim31/gladys-rte: RTE eco2mix (French power mix and CO2) and EcoWatt for Gladys Assistant · GitHub
- For the electric grid: nothing to do, no account or key required.
- For EcoWatt (optional): create a free account on data.rte-france.com, subscribe to the EcoWatt API, and copy the application identifier and secret into Gladys.
- Discovery tab: add the devices.
Honest small reservations
- Only mainland France, and the figures arrive with about an hour’s delay. No CO₂ forecast.
- The shares are in whole percentages, and consumption is displayed in kW, Gladys not knowing GW (the widget, however, speaks in GW).
- The EcoWatt signal keeps RTE’s numbering (from 0 to 3) to match their documentation: a green day therefore appears in the dot as a « Low » yellow. It’s a bit weird, I know ^^
- Tested on RTE’s real data for eCO2mix: at the time of writing, 44 g of CO₂ per kWh, 69% nuclear. For EcoWatt, I only checked that the service rejects a fake application: you need to create your own free key, and I haven’t done that yet.
Like the previous ones, developed with Claude Code. Independent project, not affiliated with RTE.
