[Owntrack] No updates after a certain time on iPhone

Hello !

I couldn’t find any other way to detect my partner’s presence with her iPhone (Bluetooth and LAN don’t work), so I used this feature which, for

Some suggestions:

  • Check that background services are enabled for this app (Settings → Owntracks)
  • Location services as well (Settings → Owntracks)
  • If the phone is in battery saver mode, it’s likely that these background services won’t run to save battery
  • Make sure the mode is set to « Significant changes Â». I recommend reading the Owntracks documentation which is very explicit on the subject: Location - OwnTracks Booklet

iOS defines a Significant location change as traveling a distance of at least 500 meters in 5 minutes. This mode allows the app to run in background and minimize the power consumption.

This standard tracking mode reports significant location changes only (>500m and at most once every 5 minutes). This is defined by Apple and is optimal with respect to battery usage.

As mentioned, on iOS, the app won’t wake up at regular intervals, but on large changes of position — it’s done automatically by the OS so as not to wake apps too often and thus save battery.

Thank you very much for this valuable information, I’ll take a look tonight

Here are the details :

everything seems correct to me though

And can you confirm that the app isn’t being force‑closed by your wife and that the phone isn’t permanently in battery saver mode? (On the screenshot that’s not the case, but I don’t know her habits)

And what makes you say that the data is no longer being sent?

it never uses low-power mode for that
After, how do you kill an

Uh, I don’t think so, but I’m not an expert

It’s possible in that case that she could be killed, so I’ll check with her

Confirmed in Owntracks’ GitHub issues:

The answer is yes. If you kill (swipe out) the app, it does not receive any more locations from iOS.

ah yeah not cool ^^

Hello !

I experienced the same issues with Owntracks on iPhone: if the Owntracks app is active on my phone (= visible on the screen, or closed but recently opened), motion detection works well and notifications arrive in Gladys.
But quickly, the iPhone optimizes its battery usage and stops reporting movements to the Owntracks app, which means notifications no longer arrive in Gladys.

I tested a few other systems, and I’m now satisfied with the following solution:
The IFTTT app installed on my iPhone, with an applet that uses the trigger « Location / You enter an area Â» and the action « Webhook / Make a web request Â» which goes through GladysPlus’ OpenAPI to update a Gladys MQTT device.

Used for a few days, it reliably detects my movements continuously, without me having to worry about whether the IFTTT app is running on my smartphone.
And my garage opens by itself when I enter my neighborhood
